United Airlines 747 Hits Airbridge at Melbourne Airport-UPDATE
A United Airlines Boeing 747 overshot a parking bay damaging the wing as it was pulling in to its gate at Melbourne Airport this morning.
United Flight 839 was inbound from Sydney and was almost stopped at gate when the incident occurred.
‘One of the plane’s passengers, Luke, who did not want to give his last name, said he heard the crunching of fibreglass and aluminium when it hit.
‘‘The plane had almost stopped. I was sitting on the wing and saw it getting a bit too close for comfort to the aerobridge,’’ Luke said.’
It took about 45 minutes to push the plane back and bring portable stairs to get the passengers off.
No one was reported injured.
The impact put a small dent (about 40 centimeters) in to the aerobridge and also a small dent in the wing.
The plane has been taken out of service.
